'The Ocean' has been in the works along with other Volunteeer material for the past 4 years, from the first melodies to the final production. To me the song has a special meaning as it took shape from a surprising and confusing burst of emotions that hit me when becoming a parent. The sound bite in the beginning is my daughter in her first year giggling as the original idea for the verse melody was recorded as a voice memo at the home piano. The sound bite in the very end is her again 4 years later reciting the hook lyrics. The song also stands out to me as a turning point for me to believe that I could sing my songs myself, which is a big step for someone like me who has spent most of my career writing and producing for others. The choir parts are performed by the Brooklyn Youth Chorus recorded in NYC alongside the Cape Town Youth Chorus, recorded in Stellenbosch, South Africa. Additional background vocals performed by the multi talented Enoch Smith Jr. The Saxophone is played by Hessismore's Matt Parker, a New York based musical superhero with whom I try to spend as much music time with as possible. That goes for the entire group of gifted musicians in the Hessismore ensemble, a project that serves as a huge source of inspiration to me - Needless to say I am very happy to make available here also a Volunteeer remix of 'Heyithinkyouareterrific' a song from the new Hessismore album Myheadisaballroom / Whoneedsapalaceanyway also put out on New York micro label This Is Care Of.
Thank you for listening. More songs, collaborations and remixes are on the way.
